How to join

If you like singing and can hold a tune, and you think you might enjoy singing in harmony, we’d be glad to welcome you at one of our rehearsals. Call Pat on 01983 296519 or just turn up at Carisbrooke Primary School, Wellington road, Newport on a Thursday evening; we meet there at 7.30 and we’re there till 10. Come and listen and get a taste of what we do.

You’ll see that we have four voice sections in our chorus:

  • Leads: usually sing the melody
  • Tenors: sing harmony above the lead
  • Basses: sing harmony below the lead
  • Baritones: sing to complete the harmony chords

You’ll see how we work on our songs, and how we develop our singing craft. You’ll probably hear some laughter and a lot of friendly interchanges. And you’ll hear the unique barbershop sound; we really are very different from other choirs and choruses, as you’ll see...

If you want to be part of what you see and hear, you’ll be made very welcome; we’ll listen to your voice (in a private corner) to find out which of the four parts would suit you best (this isn’t an audition!).

A few weeks later, we’ll ask you to try our quartet test so we can assess how you’re getting on and offer guidance as necessary.

Many of our members don’t read music, as this isn’t a requirement, but you will need to be able to sing in tune and hold your part. To help you with learning songs, we’ll provide you with Teach CDs to take home and listen to, as well as vocal coaching, encouragement and advice about developing your singing.

We hope you’ll want to attend our rehearsals every week, and we’d like you to do a bit of practice at home too.

When you’re ready to join us, you can become a fully-paid-up member of the barbershop family – and at £10 per month + a one-off payment of £2 per year, it’s a steal!

This subscription includes annual membership of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) with whom our chorus is affiliated.

And that’ll be just the beginning...
